Before buying a UK eSIM, check the mobile plan you already pay for. On my own visit in 2023, my Irish Three plan covered what I needed. If your current allowance also includes the UK, a second plan may be unnecessary. If it does not, the choice gets more interesting: cheap fixed data, an unlimited package with a daily speed allowance, or a plan with a local number for calls.
For a week of maps, messages and train bookings, I would start by comparing Nomad 10GB for €15.57, Saily 10GB for €16.99 and Airalo 10GB for €17.50, all valid for 30 days. Holafly’s seven-day unlimited plan is €25.50. Those are different products, so the extra cost only makes sense if the allowance and hotspot rules suit how you travel.
Your route matters as much as the price. London, a weekend in Edinburgh and a drive through the Highlands are different coverage questions. Below I separate the networks listed for the actual packages, explain the limits behind “unlimited”, and show what changes if you need ordinary phone calls instead of WhatsApp.

A quick way to choose
Fixed-data value: Nomad 20GB/30 days at €22.24, with Three/EE and 4G listed for that package.
Unlimited data with a simple day count: Holafly seven days at €25.50, with 1GB/day for hotspot and a fair-use policy.
EE as the primary network: Airalo 10GB/30 days at €17.50 or seven-day unlimited at €25, with 3GB/day before speed reduces to 1Mbps.
Security tools in the same app: Saily 10GB/30 days at €16.99; its seven-day unlimited plan is €23.99 with 5GB/day before up to 1Mbps.
A local UK number: Nomad’s separate Vodafone calls plan starts at €11.56 for 5GB, 100 minutes and 100 SMS over 30 days. Promotional codes do not apply to that product.
A rural itinerary: check the exact postcodes with Ofcom before choosing a network.
UK Coverage After Brexit: Two Different Checks
A regional travel eSIM and roaming on your home mobile plan are different contracts. A label such as “Europe” does not tell you every country included in a travel eSIM. Open the selected package’s country list and look for United Kingdom. Do the same for Ireland if Dublin is part of your trip.
For your existing SIM, read your carrier’s UK roaming allowance and charges. Some tariffs still include it; others charge extra. The UK’s departure from the EU does not establish the coverage of every reseller’s regional eSIM. The useful question is what your own tariff and the exact travel package include today.
In 2023, while living in Ireland, I crossed over to the UK for a short visit and kept using my physical Three plan. It handled my needs during those three days without a connectivity problem. That is useful first-hand experience of travelling with an existing plan, but it does not prove how Three, EE or any travel eSIM will perform at a remote cottage or on your next route. I would check those places separately before buying.

Unlimited does not mean the same speed policy. Nomad’s standard seven-day package provides 2GB/day at 4G/5G, then 1Mbps. Airalo provides 3GB/day, then 1Mbps. Saily provides 5GB/day, then up to 1Mbps. Holafly discloses operator fair-use restrictions without a fixed daily high-speed allowance on this product page, and limits hotspot sharing to 1GB/day. Nomad’s separate 30-day Vodafone plan is advertised as “5G/No limit”; do not confuse it with the daily-allowance product. Actual speeds still depend on the device, signal and congestion.

Nomad explicitly excludes its calls/SMS packages from promotional codes, referral codes and Nomad Points. The Airalo examples are paid voice bundles, not free calls added to a data-only plan. Saily’s US-number service has a monthly subscription and separate call/text allowances; incoming and outgoing minutes both count. None of these options should be assumed to support every bank’s verification messages.
My reading of these prices: Nomad is a useful starting point for fixed data and local calls, but its selected 20GB package lists 4G. Airalo gives a clear EE disclosure. Saily’s security tools may be worth the small difference at 10GB. Holafly suits phone-heavy use when you prefer a day-based unlimited package, although its 1GB/day hotspot limit matters if a laptop is coming along.

Holafly is worth considering if you use your phone throughout the day and do not want to manage a fixed data bucket. The official UK page offers 5G where available, plus 4G/LTE. Holafly lists Orange UK, T-Mobile UK, H3G UK, VirginMediaO2 UK and Vodafone UK. Orange and T-Mobile are legacy names associated with EE, as EE’s own network history explains. I would not describe that list as five independent modern UK networks or assume it guarantees a choice of every network at every location.
Nomad eSIM: Data Value or a Local UK Number

Nomad offers several quite different UK products. The official package details list Hutchison 3G/EE and 4G for the 20GB/30-day data-only plan at €22.24. The separate Vodafone calling plan includes 5GB, 100 minutes and 100 SMS for €11.56 over 30 days. I have used Nomad in Portugal; see my Nomad eSIM Review 2026 for that experience.
- 20GB fixed data: Three/EE, 4G listed, hotspot allowed, no local number. Do not assume a 5G label elsewhere on the country page applies to this package.

How Nomad Works for UK Travel
This Nomad video shows how the eSIM service works. Check the individual package details because data-only and calls/SMS products have different allowances and network disclosures.
The plans checked activate on connection to a supported network, with a 60-day activation deadline after purchase. The voice and unlimited package details also say they are non-refundable and do not support add-ons. Check those conditions before buying early. The 20GB fixed package lists add-ons as available. The ANDRE15 coupon is for eligible data products; it does not apply to the calls/SMS packages.
Airalo: EE Packages With or Without Calls

The selected unlimited package slows to 1Mbps after 3GB each day. Its details allow 365 days from purchase to first use, with validity starting on connection in the coverage area. Top-ups are available after installation, and optional renewals can be switched on or off. Airalo permits personal hotspot use under its fair-use policy, sharing the same allowance and speed limits. The UK package explicitly excludes Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
Best for: someone who has checked their route and wants EE, or wants a single package with data, local calls and texts. The voice package details say only local calls are allowed. Do not assume an international call to your home country is included.

For any road trip, compare EE at the exact places you will visit. Airalo’s regional suggestions include EU+UK and Europe plans, but recheck the specific country list before switching from a UK-only package. The network name alone does not establish your speed inside a building or on a rural road.
Saily: Data and Security Tools in One App

Saily is an alternative if you like having data, ad blocking, web protection and virtual-location tools in one app. Its official UK page lists 10GB/30 days at €16.99 and seven-day unlimited at €23.99. It does not name a UK partner network, so I would not choose it on a claim that it definitely uses EE, Three, Vodafone or O2.

Saily says hotspot use has no separate restriction on this product page. That does not remove the data allowance or unlimited-plan speed policy: its unlimited product gives 5GB/day before data continues at up to 1Mbps. Install before travel, enable the eSIM and its data roaming, and it activates on arrival. The current activation deadline is 180 days, after which the plan activates automatically.

For a cottage, campsite or remote drive, use Ofcom Map Your Mobile with the actual postcode. Ofcom combines predicted coverage with measured performance information at postal-district level. Indoor signal can differ from outdoor coverage, and a national ranking cannot promise reception in a particular valley. I would check the accommodation and the important stops, then download the route before leaving reliable Wi-Fi.
Where eSIM Can Fail in the UK
There are two separate things that can go wrong: the local network may have no usable signal, or the eSIM may be installed but set up on the wrong data line. Keeping a screenshot of the provider’s instructions and a few essentials offline helps with both.
- London Underground and Elizabeth line: TfL’s current coverage page says all Elizabeth line stations have 4G and its tunnels have 4G/5G. It also lists Central line stations and tunnels from Shepherd’s Bush to Bank, plus continuous Victoria line coverage from Brixton to Green Park. Other sections have exceptions, and rollout is still continuing. A connected station does not prove every tunnel on your journey is connected.
- Highlands, islands and rural Wales: check the exact places you plan to stay. Avoid claims that one carrier works everywhere or that every island has no signal. Terrain and the nearest site matter more than a destination label.
- Lake District and countryside drives: save your route and accommodation details before setting off. Do not treat a good connection in a nearby town as evidence for the whole valley.
- Long-distance trains: tunnels and rural sections can interrupt mobile data. Download tickets, work files and entertainment before boarding if you will need them throughout the journey.
Tips for Using an eSIM in the UK
- Check your existing roaming first. Compare your carrier’s UK allowance with the total travel-eSIM price. If your home plan already covers the trip, use it.
- Check the phone and the country list. Your exact handset must support eSIM and be network-unlocked. A regional product needs to list the United Kingdom and any other stop you will visit.
- Install while you have Wi-Fi. Follow the package’s activation instructions and deadline, because installation and the start of validity are not always the same event. Our eSIM activation guide covers the phone settings.
- Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data. Enable roaming on that line when the provider requires it. Turn off home-SIM data roaming and automatic data switching if you are not using the home plan for data. Calls on the home number can still have separate charges.
- Save routes and tickets. Keep booking references and accommodation details offline. Downloaded maps do not replace live public-transport information, so save the route you need before heading underground.
- Choose calls deliberately. Nomad’s €11.56 Vodafone package includes a UK number, 5GB, 100 minutes and 100 SMS. Airalo’s €14.50 package includes 5GB, 50 minutes and 50 SMS over 30 days. Check local-number restrictions. WhatsApp calls use data; they are not the same as calling a hotel’s ordinary phone line.

Final Verdict: What I Would Buy for a UK Trip
I would start with my existing plan. That worked for me on my 2023 visit with Three, and there is little value in buying another allowance you will not use. If UK roaming is expensive or missing, I would choose around the trip I am actually taking.
For a week of city travel, Nomad’s 10GB at €15.57 or 20GB at €22.24 is the first comparison I would make. The important catch is the 4G label on the selected 20GB package. If you need a local number for reservations or calls to a host, look at the separate €11.56 Vodafone voice package instead. It includes 5GB, 100 minutes and 100 SMS, but no promotional-code discount.
Airalo is a sensible alternative when you specifically want EE and have checked that network around your accommodation. Its 10GB plan is €17.50, and the calls/text tab gives you a different set of bundles. The seven-day unlimited plan is €25, but the 3GB daily high-speed allowance is a meaningful limit if you plan to stream or tether heavily.
Holafly is the option I would weigh for a phone-heavy week when avoiding a fixed data bucket matters more than the lowest price. Seven days costs €25.50. I have used Holafly in other countries, but I would still read the UK conditions: 1GB/day hotspot and possible fair-use speed reductions. If your laptop will be online for hours, that hotspot cap can decide the purchase.
Saily suits someone who wants the security tools and a familiar app. At €16.99 for 10GB it sits between Nomad and Airalo. Its €23.99 seven-day unlimited plan gives a larger stated daily high-speed allowance than the standard Nomad and Airalo unlimited packages, but it still drops to up to 1Mbps after 5GB/day. The unnamed UK partner is a reason to ask support before choosing it for a route where one network is essential.
For a full month, Nomad’s separate €43.59 Vodafone unlimited package deserves a look because the provider advertises it without the daily speed cap used on its shorter unlimited product. Check the non-refundable condition and the exact plan at checkout. For the Highlands or an island itinerary, I would make the postcode check before the price comparison, and keep maps and bookings offline whichever provider I chose.
