Its Italy package and Europe 35 Countries package make a useful side-by-side decision: stay with Italy for Rome, Florence and Venice, or consider the regional option if the same holiday includes Switzerland. At this check, 20GB for 30 days costs €21.93 for Italy or €23.69 on the Europe 35 promotion. The difference is €1.76 before coupons.

That is a more useful starting point than choosing whichever card says “cheapest”. A weekend in Rome, two weeks travelling by train and a Lake Como stay with a day in Lugano do not need exactly the same product. Your plan needs to cover the places on your itinerary, last until the end of the trip and suit how you actually use your phone.

Nomad eSIM does not win every price comparison. Ubigi has a stronger sticker price for several fixed-data Italy plans. Holafly suits eligible travellers who prefer buying unlimited data by the day. Airalo offers several allowance and validity combinations, while Saily combines reusable setup with security features. All five remain in this guide because each answers a different practical need.

Before buying any of them, check whether your existing mobile plan already includes suitable roaming in Italy. Eligible EU roaming can be the simplest solution, although fair-use limits and the terms of your home contract still matter. Switzerland requires a separate check. For a short city break with modest use, start small rather than buying 50GB simply because the unit price looks attractive. For a longer trip, compare the total allowance with your likely video calls, uploads and hotspot use. A 30-day plan is a validity window, not a recommendation that every month-long traveller needs the same number of gigabytes.

Italy eSIM Plans and Prices: September 2026

The following tables use official euro storefront prices checked on September 27. They are not currency conversions and do not deduct coupons. Promotions can change, and a regional product may have different networks and activation rules from the country product sold by the same brand.

1. Nomad eSIM Italy: Choose the Coverage Area Before the Allowance

I would begin with one question: does the trip stay in Italy? For Rome, Florence, Venice and the Amalfi Coast, the Italy-only package is straightforward. Its current partner list is Iliad and Vodafone, both listed with 5G. Network access still depends on your device, location and the service available there. Nomad eSIM’s Italy catalogue lists the current options.

For Milan or Lake Como followed by Lugano, I would compare the Europe 35 Countries package before paying. It explicitly includes Italy and Switzerland. Its Italian network list is Iliad, WIND Tre and Vodafone with 5G; in Switzerland it lists Salt and Sunrise with 5G. These are product details, not measured performance results. The 20GB regional price is currently reduced from €32.46, and the 50GB regional price from €42.11. The 50GB equality is therefore a temporary sticker-price comparison. This is the reason Nomad eSIM leads my recommendation: you can make a concrete choice about the whole route, rather than discover at the border that a domestic purchase does not cover the next stop. Take care with the variant name. Nomad eSIM also sells a Europe 36 Countries product with different prices and networks. The 35-country product above explicitly includes France, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino and Vatican City as well as Italy and Switzerland. Read the selected package list rather than assuming every product called “Europe” is identical.

The selected Italy unlimited products disclose 2GB of high-speed data per day followed by 1Mbps, with the allowance resetting every 24 hours from activation. That is quite different from a 20GB total allowance you can distribute across the holiday. If one day involves a large upload and the next is mostly offline, a fixed-data plan may suit you better. Nomad eSIM allows hotspot use, subject to the phone and network. The current Italy products have add-ons: buy one while the base plan remains active, and it starts after the base allowance runs out or expires. The Italy plan starts when it connects to a covered network or after 60 days. A regional plan can begin in another covered country before you reach Italy. From Belgium, for example, I would not switch the regional line on for data several days before departure unless I wanted its validity to start then. 2. Holafly Italy: Unlimited Data by the Day

Holafly remains worth considering when you prefer choosing the length of the trip instead of estimating a total allowance. Its Italy product lists Vodafone Italy and WINDTRE, with 4G/LTE and 5G where available. It includes unlimited data for the selected duration, but the network can apply fair-use speed restrictions. The important distinction is between phone use and sharing. Holafly’s Italy day plan includes 1GB of hotspot sharing per day. That can be enough for light tasks on another device, but it is not unlimited laptop data. Check your work pattern before buying it for video meetings, backups or two people sharing one connection.

There is also an eligibility condition that matters for readers based in Europe. Holafly’s published terms restrict domestic use and define the domestic area for EU-based customers as the entire EU. If you are based in an EU country and want this service for Italy, ask Holafly to confirm your eligibility before purchase. Install before travelling; the destination connection starts the plan, and a day is a 24-hour period. The installed profile cannot simply be transferred to another phone. Holafly’s guidance for additional days is to buy another plan and install its profile, so keep the working eSIM until you have followed the replacement instructions. These details are worth checking before relying on the word “unlimited”.

3. Airalo Italy: Several Allowances, Durations and Listed Networks

Airalo’s Mamma Mia Italy range is useful when you want to match both the data amount and validity to the trip. Its current product lists Wind Tre and Vodafone with 5G, and Iliad with 4G. The available technology therefore depends on which partner network the phone is using. Airalo’s official Italy page contains the selected plan details.

Compare the whole row. A 10GB package lasting seven days is a different purchase from 10GB lasting 30 days, even though both have the same allowance. The 30-day option now costs €17.50. If your phone use is modest and the visit is brief, a smaller package may be a better fit than an unlimited offer.

The Italy unlimited products currently give 5GB at full speed per day, followed by 1Mbps. The country-specific product details take precedence over generic descriptions of other Airalo unlimited packages. Hotspot is supported on compatible devices and uses the same allowance. A network list alone does not guarantee automatic access to the strongest signal at every moment.

The package starts on first use on a supported network in Italy. It is data-only, with no Italian number or conventional calls and SMS. This official introduction explains Airalo’s service rather than a measured Italy coverage test. The Italian product also explicitly includes Sicily, Sardinia, Capri, Ischia and Elba. Inclusion in the destination area does not promise continuous service on every beach, ferry or mountain road.

4. Saily Italy: Reusable Setup and App Security Features

Saily is a reasonable option if you value its virtual location, ad blocker and web protection alongside travel data. These are useful distinctions, but Saily explicitly says the service is not a VPN. I would not buy it on the assumption that it provides a full VPN’s privacy guarantees on hotel or airport Wi-Fi. Saily’s security-feature explanation.

The unlimited Italy range provides 5GB of high-speed data per day and then 1Mbps. The allowance resets at local midnight; if the device is offline then, the reset takes effect when data traffic resumes. Moving time zones does not create an extra allowance. The country page does not publicly name its Italian carrier partners, so I cannot honestly insert TIM, Vodafone or another network into the comparison. Saily Italy plans and service terms.

Saily’s current activation window is 180 days. A plan can activate automatically when you arrive with the line and roaming enabled, or automatically after that purchase window. You can add another plan on the reusable profile. Optional automatic top-up is a separate setting: understand when it buys another package and disable it if you prefer to approve each purchase yourself.

Hotspot is allowed, but the unlimited terms restrict excessive tethering and using it as a replacement for fixed-line broadband. A separate optional US phone-number service is not an Italian number included with these data prices. For ordinary use of WhatsApp, keep your existing registered number and use the data connection.

5. Ubigi Italy: Competitive One-Off Data Prices

Ubigi deserves a close look if the trip stays within Italy and price is your main concern. Its €12 10GB / 30-day plan is cheaper at the current sticker price than the equivalent Nomad eSIM, Airalo and Saily fixed-data examples here. Its 25GB / 30-day plan is €19. That is why the Nomad eSIM recommendation is about route fit rather than a claim that Nomad eSIM is always cheapest. Official Ubigi Italy catalogue.

The product pages list Iliad and WindTre. Hotspot uses the plan’s allowance. The one-off unlimited plans give 5GB of high-speed data per day, followed by 2Mbps, with the daily reset measured from the initial activation time. “Unlimited” here therefore describes continued data access, not unlimited full-speed data. Ubigi’s eight-day product details.

Smartstart begins the package when you reach the covered destination; an unactivated purchase expires after six months. The eSIM profile is reusable, and Ubigi says you can top up without Wi-Fi or remaining data credit. That still requires supported cellular connectivity. For a normal holiday, choose the one-off product unless you deliberately want a longer commitment. A small monthly price is not the cost of a cancellable one-week visit. Ubigi’s current data plans do not include an Italian telephone number, regular voice calls or SMS.

Full Italy eSIM Comparison: September 2026

For a one-week trip, compare the total paid, not just the price per gigabyte. For a work-heavy trip, compare the daily fast-data threshold and hotspot terms. For a cross-border holiday, compare the actual countries. These three checks prevent most of the misleading comparisons between products that happen to use the same “unlimited” or “Europe” label.

What Is the Best Carrier for an Italy eSIM?

There is no honest way to identify a universal best carrier for your whole Italian itinerary from provider marketing pages alone. Reception can change inside a thick-walled apartment, in a busy station or around a bend on a coastal road. We have not run a controlled, identical-device comparison of these five products across Italy.

The named partners in the selected plans are Vodafone, WINDTRE or Wind Tre, and Iliad. None of the named partner lists for these selected products identifies TIM; Saily’s carrier list is undisclosed. That does not establish that no travel eSIM can ever use TIM, or that one carrier is the only workable option for the Amalfi Coast.

Use a coverage map as a planning aid, not a guarantee. Iliad explains that its map is computer-modelled, indicative outdoor coverage; indoor reception can differ. Nor should every Italian railway tunnel be described as a blackout. FS documented 4G work on the Bologna to Florence high-speed tunnels and the Milan to Bologna route with the four major operators. Coverage in Italy: Plan for Your Actual Stops

Italy’s cities, coasts, islands and mountains make different demands on connectivity. The table below is a preparation checklist, not a set of measured speed results or a promise that a specific village has continuous signal. For destination information, consult Italy’s official tourism website.

On a ferry, a phone may use a terrestrial network while close enough to shore, then lose it or encounter a maritime service. EU roaming rules distinguish terrestrial connections from satellite services. A land package should not be treated as internet at sea. Switch off unwanted roaming and automatic network use before you assume the boat connection is included. Official guidance on roaming aboard ships and aircraft.

Italy eSIM Travel Tips

• Check the phone before the plan. Confirm eSIM support, carrier-unlocked status and available eSIM storage. A cheap package is no help if it cannot be installed on the device you are taking.
• Keep a local SIM in the comparison. If you need an Italian number or conventional calls, a local operator can be worth considering. Check the operator’s identification requirements, activation fee, included calls and total price directly.
• Save more than a map. Download booking references, addresses and the information required by your ticket type. Google Maps offline supports driving guidance within a downloaded area, but not offline walking, cycling or public-transport directions. Google explains those offline limits.
• Check the actual train ticket. Trenitalia tickets are not sold exclusively in apps. Its Digital Regional Ticket is available through several channels, validates automatically at the scheduled departure and no longer requires check-in. • Do not delegate road restrictions to the eSIM. Check municipal signs and official access rules before entering a historic centre or restricted traffic zone. A functioning map does not authorise access, and a mobile connection does not prevent a traffic fine.
• Watch the activation clock. Install on reliable Wi-Fi, then follow the plan’s trigger. A Europe plan can start in a covered departure country, while a domestic Italy product has a different coverage area.
• Measure your own data use. Review a typical day in the phone settings. Streaming, cloud backups and laptop updates can dominate consumption. A 5GB or 10GB starting allowance can suit lighter use; heavy video or tethering requires a larger buffer. These are planning examples, not measured needs for every traveller.
• Keep the home number deliberately. WhatsApp can continue with its registered number while the eSIM supplies data. Regular calls, SMS and verification messages on the home SIM remain subject to that carrier’s roaming terms. Disable mobile-data switching if it would let the home line take over.

For Rome followed by a relaxed coast stay, I would rather buy a sensible allowance and save the essentials than pay for a very large plan out of fear of losing reception. More data does not create a signal where the network is unavailable.
