Best eSIM for Portugal 2026: What Five Months Taught Me

I would open Jetpac’s fixed-data range before reaching for its unlimited option. Thirty gigabytes for €23 over 30 days is a useful starting point if some days are mostly maps and messages and another involves uploading photos or briefly connecting a laptop. You can use that fixed allowance unevenly, instead of planning around a fresh high-speed threshold every day.

The comparison is unusually clear at the current sale prices: Jetpac’s seven-day unlimited plan is €26, with 3GB at standard speed in each 24-hour cycle before it slows to up to 1Mbps. The 30GB fixed package costs less and lasts longer. That does not make it right for every heavy user, but it makes the fixed plan the one I would check first for this kind of Portugal trip.

I learned the importance of counting laptop data during my Airalo use in Figueira da Foz, described below. That was an Airalo experience, not a Jetpac test. My Jetpac recommendation comes from the current package prices and conditions, not from a claim that I measured its signal around Portugal.

Check the price ladder, not just the data size. At this check, 20GB costs €33.50, while the promotional 30GB and 40GB packages cost €23 and €28.50. I would skip that 20GB tier while those prices remain available. If you need less, the 10GB and 15GB packages keep the same 30-day validity. The separate new-user JETSETGO offer is not the same as my reader code, and discounts should not be assumed to combine.

The useful extra when moving between places

The second reason I would shortlist Jetpac is more modest than “free internet”: on qualifying new purchases of 3GB or more, it advertises continued access to WhatsApp chat, Google Maps navigation, Uber and Grab after the paid data runs out. On a Portugal itinerary, I would think of the address of the next apartment or a message to the host while arranging more data.

This benefit does not keep a laptop working, make email or CP ticket downloads free, or create a signal where there is none. Do not assume it covers WhatsApp calls, video or every function in the named apps. The checked public material did not establish an unlimited period of access after a pack expires. Save tickets, addresses and essential directions offline too.

Networks, sharing and the right country list

Jetpac’s current Portugal coverage panel names Vodafone and OPTIMUS. I have kept the labels it displays. Its country-specific support table confirms LTE for both and does not confirm 5G in Portugal, so I would not buy this plan on a guaranteed-5G claim. A list of partners also does not establish reception inside a particular apartment or along an entire train journey.

Hotspot is supported, but shared devices use the same fixed allowance or unlimited speed policy. For two people working all day, large backups or time-critical calls, I would still arrange dependable Wi-Fi. A travel eSIM can fill a gap; the selected-app benefit is not an extra work-data allowance.

Adding Spain? The Portugal package lists Portugal only. Jetpac’s Europe package explicitly lists Portugal and Spain, with 30GB/30 days at €28.50 in the current euro selector. That is €5.50 more than the Portugal-only 30GB sale, so choose it when the itinerary needs the extra countries. Madeira and the Azores are not separately identified in the local product panel; confirm the exact package with Jetpac before an island trip. Flight and calling extras, with their limits

SmartDelay may be useful if your Portugal trip starts or finishes with a flight. Register at least 24 hours before departure; Jetpac recommends 48 hours. You can register up to two flights per purchased data pack and one companion. A qualifying airline-reported delay of at least one hour and the lounge’s entry conditions apply. This is not automatic access at every Lisbon, Porto or Faro lounge, and it does not cover a late train. Check the official SmartDelay rules before relying on it.

Jetpac also sells optional in-app voice packs with Portugal on the supported-destination list. They are separate from the data package, not an included Portuguese mobile number or standard SMS service. Check the current price and supported call destinations on Jetpac Voice if this matters to you.

My reason to choose it: a larger fixed allowance for a holiday that moves between places, with occasional hotspot use and a limited selected-app fallback. How to set up a Jetpac eSIM

This Jetpac video explains installation. It is a general setup guide, not a test of Portuguese reception. Install on a reliable connection and keep the purchase instructions available.

Unactivated Jetpac packs remain available for three months. The selected validity starts when the eSIM connects to a supported destination network. A reusable profile does not automatically include every future country; you still need the appropriate package.

I used Holafly in Lisbon and Porto during my time in Portugal. I understand the appeal of choosing the number of travel days and getting on with the trip. Its current seven-day package costs €25.50, and the official Portugal page lists MEO, NOS and Vodafone Portugal, with 4G/LTE and 5G where available.

The distinction I would pay attention to is unlimited data on the phone versus sharing it with other devices. This prepaid destination product allows 1GB per day for hotspot. That makes it a different purchase from a large fixed-data allowance if the laptop is part of the plan.

Phone data remains subject to network fair use, so I would not invent a fixed daily high-speed allowance where the Portugal page does not state one. The 1GB/day hotspot allowance is explicit. Holafly Plans, the monthly subscription product, has separate pricing and sharing rules; those should not be applied to this prepaid trip eSIM.

The Portugal page explicitly includes Madeira and the Azores, with the usual limitations in remote or mountainous places. Inclusion in the country list still differs from having a dependable connection on every trail. Install before departure and follow the arrival-activation instructions in the purchase email.

Installing Holafly on an iPhone

The video demonstrates installation through the Holafly app. Use the current instructions supplied with your package if the app layout has changed.

For our two-person work setup, I would compare a larger shared allowance before choosing this prepaid plan. Unlimited phone data does not remove its separate hotspot limit.

I used Airalo in Figueira da Foz, where I lived. That gives this section a different basis from a researched-only comparison: I can describe what happened in our own session, while using the current official packages for today’s prices and network information.

Airalo’s 50GB/30-day plan at €32.50 is still a useful comparison when you need more than Jetpac’s 30GB offer. At 10GB/30 days, Airalo is €10.50 versus Jetpac’s current €10 sale. That small gap alone would not persuade me to abandon an app I already knew; package preferences and an accepted coupon can also affect the final choice.

The current network panel lists NOS and MEO for the fixed and unlimited Portugal packages, with 5G where available. Some older descriptive text still mentions Vodafone. This guide follows the current network selector, rather than treating all three as confirmed for a new purchase. The official package details explicitly include Madeira and the Azores.

For unlimited packages, the high-speed allowance is 3GB per 24-hour period, followed by 1Mbps until the next reset. Hotspot uses the same allowance and speed conditions. The packages here are data-only: keeping your normal WhatsApp number is not the same as receiving a Portuguese mobile number with calls and SMS.

The current activation window is 365 days from purchase, with validity starting on supported-network use. Top-ups are offered, but check your package and any automatic renewal setting. A reusable eSIM profile does not mean a three-day data allowance remains valid indefinitely.

How Airalo works

This provider video introduces the Airalo service and app. It is useful context for installation and package management, rather than a demonstration of Portugal’s network speeds.

Match the validity to your dates. Ten gigabytes for seven days and ten gigabytes for thirty days are different purchases, even when the headline allowance looks identical.

I used Nomad in Lisbon and Porto, so it remains an app I would include in my own shortlist. Today’s 20GB/30-day package is €17.86. If 20GB covers the trip, it costs less upfront than Jetpac’s €23 30GB promotion; there is no reason to pay for extra data just because the price per GB improves.

The checked fixed and unlimited plans list Vodafone and MEO. The country information supports 5G where available, with actual reception depending on the plan, device and location. Hotspot sharing is supported, using the same allowance.

The three-day unlimited package at €9.82 is worth a look for a short visit if 2GB/day at high speed is enough. Speed then falls to 1Mbps. That is a different full-speed allowance from Jetpac’s or Airalo’s unlimited plan, so I would not compare only the number of days and the word “unlimited”.

The plan begins on destination-network use or automatically 60 days after purchase under the checked activation rules. Nomad’s Portugal page warns that overseas territories may not be included; confirm the exact package before depending on it in Madeira or the Azores. Do not infer island coverage from the country name alone.

How to install and activate Nomad eSIM

This is a general iPhone installation and activation tutorial from Nomad. Follow the current order instructions and check when your package validity starts.

For a brief hotspot session, watch both the phone and laptop usage counters. Automatic photo syncing and app updates can consume a small allowance before you notice.

Ubigi’s 10GB/7-day package at €9 is a useful option for a week in Portugal. The 30-day version costs €11. That €2 difference buys more time to use the same data, so I would choose according to the dates rather than automatically taking the lower headline price.

The published Portuguese partner is MEO (TMN). Hotspot is allowed on the checked packages. This is a comparison of Ubigi’s official offer, not a claim that I personally tested it during my stay in Portugal.

Ubigi describes its unlimited speed thresholds as package totals: 20GB at full speed for seven days, 30GB for fifteen days and 60GB for thirty days. Speed drops to 2Mbps for the rest of the validity after that allowance is used. These are not 20GB, 30GB or 60GB every day.

Smartstart begins the plan when the eSIM connects in the covered destination. An unused one-off plan expires six months after purchase. You can keep the eSIM profile for later travel and buy the appropriate package, but the existing Portugal allowance does not automatically cover another country.

Buying and installing a Ubigi eSIM

Ubigi’s tutorial shows the purchase and installation process on iPhone. It is a general guide, not a Portugal coverage demonstration.

Check that you selected a one-off or recurring plan deliberately. Keep the profile if you intend to buy another Ubigi package, and review expiry and renewal conditions separately.

Maya’s current Portugal page offers global unlimited time passes, including seven days at €16.99 and thirty days at €42.49. The old 100GB/180-day country offer was not in the current catalogue, so I would not plan a long stay around an old screenshot or video.

The checked seven-day plan lists Vodafone 5G and NOS 5G in Portugal and supports hotspot. That is useful information, but I would read the usage policy before treating the low headline price as an unrestricted working connection.

There is a conflict worth knowing before purchase. The marketing page uses no-cap and no-throttling language, while the legal terms describe a daily high-speed quota followed by standard speed. The checked terms do not give a numerical quota or reduced-speed figure. I would ask Maya what applies to the selected pass, particularly for video calls or hotspot work, rather than filling that gap with an assumed number.

The acceptable-use policy also excludes replacing fixed home or office broadband and sustained unattended backups or bulk transfers. Optional auto top-up is off by default in the terms; enabling it can purchase another pass at the end of the current validity. Those details matter more for a month in one place than for a few days of sightseeing.
