Airalo reports more than 30 million users and sells packages for 200+ destinations. That is the reach of its catalog, not the coverage of one eSIM. The current Discover fixed-data and Discover+ lists contain 168 countries; Discover Unlimited lists 170. Those differences matter more than the headline total when you are planning a route.

For a trip within the EU and UK: start with EU+UK. Its 10GB/30-day plan is €22.50, compared with €28.50 for the broader Europe plan.
For a wider European route: check Europe’s 41-country list, especially if Switzerland, Norway, Turkey or the Balkans are involved.
For several trips across continents: Discover 20GB lasts 365 days and costs $66. That is a shared 20GB allowance, not 20GB every month.
For calls and SMS: consider Discover+, which includes a US +1 number. Ordinary Europe and EU+UK plans are data-only.

How Does Airalo Work?
Buy a package for your destination, install its eSIM on an unlocked, compatible phone and select it for mobile data when you arrive. You can keep your physical SIM installed. The video below walks through the setup.
Install while you still have reliable Wi-Fi, but read the validity rule first. The checked Europe, EU+UK and Discover packages start on first use in their coverage area, so enabling one while you are already in a covered country can start its clock. At your destination, select Airalo for mobile data and follow its roaming instructions. Turn off mobile-data switching and data roaming on your home line to reduce the risk of unintended roaming charges; receiving calls on that line can still cost extra.

How to Use and Activate an Airalo eSIM on iPhone and Android
Buying the correct plan is only the first step. The installation menu looks different on iPhone and Android, so this walkthrough shows where to add the eSIM, how to label the new line, and which mobile-data settings must be enabled before Airalo can connect.
Keep the eSIM installed unless Airalo support tells you otherwise. Reinstallation can be restricted. On arrival, check that the correct line is selected for data and follow that package’s APN and roaming instructions. Discover+ adds a US +1 phone number, bundled minutes and SMS to the data allowance. Incoming SMS do not reduce the SMS balance; calls round up to a full minute, and incoming calls need remaining minutes. This can help with ordinary calls and texts while traveling, but a new +1 number does not receive messages sent to your existing home number. Bank or app verification is not guaranteed.

Discover prices are in USD, checked 21 October 2026. At $66, the 20GB/365-day fixed-data package works out at $3.30 per included GB. It is useful when you will actually use the allowance across covered trips; unused data and remaining time should not be mistaken for a monthly subscription.

Airalo offers local, regional, global, fixed-data, unlimited, and data-plus-calls plans. The names can look similar at checkout, but the coverage area, validity period, activation rule, network, and fair-use policy can be completely different.
Before paying, open the package details and check every destination, when validity starts, whether top-ups are supported and whether calls or SMS are included. Is Airalo Unlimited Actually Unlimited?
You can keep using data, but “unlimited” does not mean unlimited high-speed data.
Airalo also allows network management during congestion, separate from the daily threshold. For maps and messages, reduced speed may be enough. A laptop download, video backup or long call can make the threshold matter much sooner. I would choose a fixed-data package or compare another plan if full-speed access throughout a workday is essential.

I would keep Airalo on the shortlist for a traveler who wants a clear choice of packages and one app to manage them. Its strongest case is practical: a narrower EU+UK plan when that covers the whole trip, a broader Europe plan when it does not, and Discover+ when you need a new number for calls and SMS.
For a typical EU-and-UK trip, I would compare the €22.50 EU+UK 10GB/30-day offer before paying €28.50 for Europe. For repeated trips across continents, the $66 Discover 20GB/365-day plan deserves a look, provided its 168-country list matches your travel and 20GB is enough in total. Neither choice needs an unlimited plan by default.
I would be more cautious if your work depends on high-speed tethering all day, if you need immediate support during a tight transfer, or if your route includes places outside the package list.
