The first time you need mobile data in Japan is usually an ordinary moment: finding the right train after landing, checking a hotel address or translating a menu. A good eSIM should make those moments easier. The important differences appear when you need a laptop hotspot, change your itinerary or discover that an unlimited plan has a daily high-speed limit.

Why Japan Is Different as an eSIM Destination
Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka make mobile data useful throughout the day: a change of platform, the correct station exit, a restaurant reservation or a translation. That does not mean every traveler needs unlimited data. Navigation and messaging have different requirements from uploading video or sharing a connection with a laptop.
Start with your own phone’s recent usage, then allow for days away from hotel Wi-Fi. A fixed allowance lets you use more on one day and less on another. An unlimited plan with a daily fast-data limit resets that allowance instead. The distinction matters more than the word “unlimited” on a sales page.
Shinkansen connectivity: prepare before boarding
Travel eSIMs can work on the Shinkansen, including in some tunnels. KDDI documents mobile service from KDDI, NTT Docomo and SoftBank throughout the Tohoku and Joetsu tunnel sections. It is inaccurate to assume that every tunnel means no signal.
Coverage and speed still vary along the route. Download the map areas you need, save your hotel address and keep tickets accessible offline. Google Maps offline downloads do not provide live transit, walking or cycling directions, so save important train connections separately.

Nomad eSIM: Best Overall for Flexible Japan Trips
Selected fixed plans: two listed networksNomad eSIM is my first pick for a Japan trip where I want to decide how to use my data, rather than fit every day into the same high-speed allowance. I would start with the 10 GB, 30-day plan at $16. Its current details list KDDI au and SoftBank, 4G, hotspot and compatible add-ons. You can spend more data on a busy Tokyo travel day and less on a day using hotel Wi-Fi.
The appeal is the combination: a clear total allowance, two listed network options on that particular plan, a way to share data, and a way to add more before the original allowance runs out. These features are not exclusive to Nomad eSIM. Nomad eSIM earns this recommendation because this package brings them together in a practical choice for an adaptable itinerary.
What makes the fixed plan useful in Japan?
- Data you can spread across the trip. The 10 GB allowance is shared across its 30-day validity. It is not a promise of unlimited usage: it ends when you use the allowance or reach expiry.
- Hotspot when you need another screen. You can share with a laptop, tablet or companion. Everything shared comes out of your plan. Pause cloud backups and large updates before tethering.
- Compatible top-ups on the same profile. Current Japan fixed plans use Sapphire. Buy a compatible add-on while the original plan is still active, before it expires or runs out. The add-on starts after the original expires or its data is depleted; unused original data does not roll over.
- Consumption and expiry checks. Nomad eSIM’s app or website shows remaining data and validity, with documented usage notices at 60% and 80%. Reporting can lag, so check before a day when you expect heavy use.

Choose the Nomad eSIM plan, not just the brand
The 1, 3, 5 and 10 GB plans list KDDI au and SoftBank. The 20 and 50 GB plans list KDDI au only. All six fixed-data options currently specify 4G. Moving to a larger allowance therefore does not preserve exactly the same network choice, and the page’s general 5G advertising should not override the plan details.
Two listed networks do not mean two simultaneous connections or guaranteed uninterrupted coverage. Automatic network selection is normally enough. Installation, activation and keeping the plan usable
Install on reliable Wi-Fi before departure. In Japan, select Nomad eSIM for mobile data and enable data roaming for that line. Validity starts when it connects to a supported destination network, or automatically 60 days after purchase if unused. Do not buy months ahead without checking that deadline.
Do not delete a working profile as a troubleshooting shortcut. Nomad eSIM’s current Sapphire guidance supports reinstallation or transfer, with specific limits and deletion steps. Check the instructions or contact support before removing the profile. Nomad eSIM advertises 24/7 chat and email assistance; that does not guarantee a response time or a fix in every location.

Hotspot uses the same plan allowance; the current product page does not publish a separate sharing quota. The daily fast allowance resets at local midnight. Saily’s terms restrict continuous heavy or commercial usage and high-volume computer tethering, so do not treat the 5 GB allowance as a work broadband replacement.
Saily uses a reusable profile, so another plan can be added without starting a new installation. An unused plan automatically activates after 180 days. If you enable Auto Top-Up, subsequent purchases use the full price even if your first plan used a coupon or credits.
Reinstallation is supported through the same account, including on another compatible device, but only one device can use the profile at a time. Keep that separate from sharing one phone’s connection by hotspot.

KDDI + NTT Docomo; 4G/5G listedUbigi deserves a place on the shortlist alongside Nomad eSIM. The current Japan products list KDDI and NTT Docomo, with 4G and 5G. Its 10 GB, 30-day plan costs $16.50, just $0.50 more than Nomad eSIM’s sale example. If Docomo access or a reusable profile for future trips is high on your list, that is a meaningful alternative.
Network names alone do not prove better coverage on every rural road, in every tunnel or inside your hotel. For Hokkaido, the Japanese Alps or a smaller island, check your actual stops against the available networks. Ubigi subscriptions and annual option: different commitments
The $8 / 5 GB, $18 / 20 GB and $45 / unlimited monthly options have a minimum three-month subscription period. At those rates, that means at least $24, $54 or $135 respectively before any applicable promotion. The unlimited monthly option has 60 GB of fast data per month, then 2 Mbps. The $55 annual option provides 5 GB per month for 12 months. These are not substitutes for a one-off 30-day travel price.
Hotspot is supported. A one-off plan can be bought before travel and started through Smartstart when you reach a covered destination; it expires unused after six months. Ubigi also supports buying a top-up in its app without spare data or Wi-Fi when the profile is connected to a supported network. That feature cannot provide a radio signal in an uncovered area.
Keep the reusable profile after the trip. Supported-device transfer has specific account and deletion steps. Ask support before deleting a profile if the old phone is lost or inaccessible.
